Madison Gallery Night – May 4, 2018, 5-9pm
Join us to view Out of the Depths—an exhibit featuring work by artists Joe Cory and Fadi BouKaram. This collaborative traveling art exhibition investigates the current migrant crisis from the perspective of Lebanese street photographer, BouKaram, and American painter, Cory. Powerful images of the Middle East are juxtaposed with paintings based on filtered information mediated by American news sources. Motifs of water and navigational symbols further pervade the imagery. Viewers are challenged to rethink their assumptions about what it means to be living in the Middle East and a refugee. The exhibition is curated by Matt Schneider, also of Birmingham, Alabama. Joe Cory will be present at the opening to discuss the artwork. RSVP on the CIVA Facebook Gallery Night event page. CIVA | Christians in the Visual Arts, Gallery 212, is located at 849 East Washington Avenue, Suite 212, in Madison, Wisconsin.
Born and raised in Beirut, Fadi never wanted to be a photographer. After receiving graduate degrees in engineering and business and a career in the corporate world, he realized how much he needed photography both as a therapeutic tool and as a way to discover oddities within the mundane. In 2013, he and a group of photographers from around the world started the Observe Collective, which was born out of a “common fascination with watching and documenting the diverse humanity that surrounds us.”
Joe Cory is a visual artist who lives and works in Birmingham, Alabama.
