To be a CARING community, GROWING in Christ, LOVING others and SERVING a hurting world.
Bethany’s vision for the visual arts is to highlight the abundant creative talents God has given our church community. We want to recognize how the arts not only bring life-giving beauty for enjoyment and contemplation, but provide a prophetic voice that both challenges and uplifts the viewer and speaks into our cultural context. We have found that visual artists are sometimes marginalized in the Church in comparison to musicians who have opportunity to be on worship teams, so we see the Bethany visual arts community as a place of affirming artists and facilitating new relationships.
The B Gallery
Established in 2014, Bethany’s art gallery is located in the main café and features quarterly solo and group exhibitions from artists of all styles and mediums. While we are passionate about featuring work from artists who are intent on growing in their relationship with Christ, we place no pressure on our artists to exhibit overtly religious works, but encourage them to accompany their works with short descriptions that may expound on the inspiration or process behind the work. Since Bethany Community Church attracts many new visitors to its weekend services, we have found that The B Gallery is a welcome entry point for artists and art enthusiasts outside of the Church who share our passion for the visual arts.
Meeting in front of The B Gallery in Bethany’s main café, quarterly Artists Nights take place on Thursday evenings (7-9pm) following new exhibition openings in The B Gallery. Accompanied by refreshments, the evening includes an artist talk for the latest show, a topical discussion on what it means to be a Christian in the arts, both in the Church and in the world, and an opportunity for artists to share 1-2 pieces of their recently completed work, or works in progress. This is an unintimidating environment where creators of all skill levels are welcome to attend, meet new artists, receive encouragement, and hopefully come away more inspired to create the art we love making. Artists Nights 2017-2018: September 14, December 21, March 8, June 7.
enKindle Arts Festival
Founded in 2012, our annual interdisciplinary arts festival seeks to ignite a spiritual spark by reconnecting faith and art. Coinciding with the Bethany School of Music and Arts end-of-year recitals, this one-day festival lands on the first weekend of June and features dozens of visual artists and musicians from our church and surrounding community. enKindle includes hands-on workshops, kids colouring and craft areas, musical entertainment, reflection room, and gourmet food trucks.
