Stopped in his Tracks: Ben Cowan

The work that I’m making is the result of being stopped in my tracks.

Ben Cowan plant climbing stairsBen Cowan’s imagination is captivated by elements of residential Brooklyn, New York: a leaf folding over a wrought iron gate, potted plants appearing to ascend a stoop, sneakers suspended on the branch of a tree.  In the mundane, Cowan sees metaphors for spirituality, as well as qualities of the everyday New Yorker’s life.  His paintings are, in his own words, “neutral Brooklyn scenes set up for the viewer in a way to become devotional imagery.”

Produced by CIVA member organization International Fine Art Fund, this 12-minute video on the work of Michigan-raised Brooklyn artist Ben Cowan will change your view of the “mundane.”
