A broad survey of purpose-built spaces for Christian worship from the beginnings to the present, this course will attend to questions of built structure, aesthetics, and the functionality of these spaces for liturgical celebrations and other ecclesial activities. In addition, the course will consider the theological, ecclesial, social, economic, and political dimensions of various church building projects through time and in different geographical regions. We will pay particular attention to the influence of the environment on a worshipper’s experience and participation and the ways the design and decoration of liturgical space both form and reflect the faith of the gathered community.
