Art Department Highlights
The art major at Houghton complements the Christian liberal arts experience to prepare students for teaching, professional art production, and graduate studies.
Ceramics, drawing, graphic design, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.
Houghton students may prepare for graduate study in the field of art therapy by either majoring in art (studio concentration) with a structured minor in psychology, or by majoring in psychology with a structured minor in art.
The Art Education major leads to a New York State certification in Visual Arts, pre-K through 12th grade.
The art faculty consists of five full-time professors, each of whom is actively involved in production and exhibition. All hold the terminal degree (MFA) in studio art.
We encourage art students to make every effort to view the very best works of art, and we maintain anactive travel program to support those activities. Recent art trips have taken students to New York City, Washington D.C., Boston, Cleveland, Toronto, Rochester and Buffalo. The art department also offers European art-history experiences during May term every other spring, traveling to cities such as Paris, London, Florence, Rome, and Madrid. A summer program is offered in Tanzania, providing an immersive experience in East-African culture and art.
