OUR PROGRAMS

CIVA strives to equip those called to the visual arts to flourish in their holy vocation. Our virtual and in-person programming reflects this goal by allowing participants to explore the visual arts alongside their personal faith practice, ask questions, and learn from those who have knowledge in their respective fields.

  • CIVA Biennial Conference 2023 Milwaukee Wisconsin

CIVA’s oldest and largest in-person gathering. Members and friends are invited to gather for presentations, explore groups, fellowship opportunities, and more.

  • Heart to Heart

“Heart-to-Heart” is a virtual program for CIVA members. It brings together an intimate group of creative thinkers who feel called to pray for and encourage others as they serve God through the visual arts.

  • CIVA Gathers

CIVA Gathers is a Christ-centered virtual gathering in which CIVA Members have the opportunity to connect and pray together. The doors are open to all traditions and backgrounds. Each month we will spend time with scripture and artwork from CIVA’s traveling exhibitions.

  • Liturgical Visual Arts

CIVA’s LITart symposium intends to foster a spirit of hospitality and appreciation of the myriad of ways in which art molds and is molded by the broad array of Christian visual expressions.

  • God in The Modern Wing

Join other CIVA friends as we spend a morning in conversation around the spiritual significance of Modern and Contemporary Art while touring the galleries and Sculpture Garden at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

  • Doing Good Well

Doing Good Well is CIVA’s professional development workshop for women. Participants are challenged and equipped to flourish as servant leaders in their art and faith communities to influence positive social or cultural change.

  • CIVA Summer Retreat

CIVA Summer Retreat offers three informal days of rest, relaxation, and art in an idyllic landscape. Attendees share meals, worship, and optional group activities. Families are welcome.

  • Just Art

JUSTart is CIVA’s experiential exploration of the artist’s relationship to justice. Participants visit museums and monuments, hear from experts, and wrestle with challenging justice and faith-oriented topics.

  • Kitchen Table Talks

Kitchen Table Talks are virtual gatherings where we can come together as a community to talk about tough issues facing us as a society and as Christians. It is CIVA’s goal to end each Talk with viable solutions and steps toward action.

  • Maker to Maker

Intimate groups of CIVA members virtually gathering to share their work, receive constructive feedback and discuss their discipline.

  • Nuts and Bolts

Nuts and Bolts is a 5-session webinar course covering the practical and business side of being an artist. Attend a single course or all five! This course is free for CIVA members and can be accessed directly through the CIVA Network.

  • CIVA in Florence

Join CIVA‘s Executive Director Lawan Glasscock and Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz for an afternoon in the historic La Badia in Florence as they discuss the importance of Dante in regards to the Christian visual imagination of the afterlife, morals, and the soul’s journey. Tim will be installing his commissioned series of Cantos inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy.

2018 Doing Good Well group picture

“One of the really cool things this time around was looking around the group and realizing that God has given me the privilege of living life with these women—that we are growing up together and that we are each leaders in our various spheres and that DGW has been a place of community for us, for camaraderie, healing, empowering, and setting our feet to action.”
